Vented soffit under carport roof? – GreenBuildingAdvisor

My garage/workshop has a carport on one gable end, and most of the roof continues unbroken from the main building to the carport. This includes the entire south face, and most of the north face. The carport is 4 feet narrower than the main building, so that last 4 feet of the building’s roof ganle is exposed. Hopefully that description makes sense, so now the question:

Does the gable end covered by the carport roof still need a vented soffit, or can I just block it off?
