I have been researching gutter sizing for a project and noticed that most basic sizing charts are just lookup tables that suggest fitting a 5-inch gutter for any roof under 2,200 sq ft. However, when looking into the methods published by SMACNA and the formulas determined by NIST, it becomes clear that a gutter’s required width is far more sensitive to local rainfall intensity than to the actual roof size.
I found a Gutter Size Calculator that actually runs these NIST formulas instead of relying on basic rules of thumb. According to its worked examples, a 600 sq ft roof footprint on a 5-6/12 pitch dealing with 4 in/hr of rain only requires a 2.69-inch width, meaning a standard 5-inch K-style gutter is running at just 18% of its capacity. The tool also highlights that gutter capacity scales with the square root of its slope, referencing IPC Table 1106.6.
Has anyone else moved away from the basic 5-inch default and started sizing gutters and downspouts precisely based on NOAA rainfall data and SMACNA rules? Also, this tool recommends stepping up to a 3×4 downspout because SMACNA advises against using anything under 7 square inches to prevent blockages. Do you all strictly follow this 7 sq inch minimum rule for downspouts?
