Wall Assembly Advice for Off-Grid Mountain Cabin
Hi everyone! I’m looking for some input on a wall assembly I’m planning for my off-grid mountain cabin. The cabin was built in 1986, but harsh weather and a lack of maintenance from the previous owner have left us with quite a few projects to tackle…
We’re currently overhauling our solar system, so I plan to test out this wall assembly on our powerhouse shed before applying it to the main cabin.
Here’s the assembly I’m considering:
-
Interior insulation – The existing fiberglass will remain in some areas. I plan to add closed-cell spray foam in others for increased air sealing and R-value.
-
1/2″ CDX plywood sheathing
-
Delta-Vent SA weather-resistant barrier (WRB)
-
1 layer of Roxul Comfortboard 80 exterior mineral wool insulation
-
1×4″ furring strips for a rainscreen gap
-
Hardie siding with a metal skirt at the bottom for snow protection (alternatively, I may keep the existing oak board-and-batten siding if it’s still in good shape)
Any thoughts or suggestions based on experience with similar builds or climate conditions? Thanks in advance!
