Q&A Spotlight – Frost Wall Options for a Slab-on-Grade Home – GreenBuildingAdvisor

When building a house on a slab-on-grade foundation, there are several approaches to consider depending on climate and site conditions, as shown in this archived article. In warmer regions, a slab may be as simple as a compacted gravel base topped with concrete. However, if you live in areas where your coffee freezes on the way to the car, more robust strategies are needed. Frost-protected footings, or frost walls, are typically required to prevent frost heave and protect the structural integrity of the home.
Enter homeowner Wanmi, bravely venturing into Climate Zone 6. Wanmi, outlined in a recent post that he is planning to build a slab-on-grade home and is looking for a foundation solution. His builder prefers using precast concrete frost wall panels from Superior Walls. Wanmi, however, wants to incorporate reclaimed 4-inch XPS rigid insulation beneath the slab and around its perimeter. He is also considering whether ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) might be a better option than precast frost walls. “I don’t want to take the builder too far out of his comfort zone, but I also would like to have the best possible foundation choice.”
His wall design includes 2×6 framing with Zip-R sheathing, resting on a 2×8 sill plate that spans the frost wall, rigid insulation, and the slab edge. His main concern is how the insulation will be detailed at the slab perimeter—and whether any insulation will end up exposed once the walls are in place.

(Although he wasn’t able to post any plan drawings because of the file size, we were able to re-route them via email and publish them here.)
The topic for this Spotlight is – what’s the best frost wall option and insulation details for this slab-on-grade home?
Both choices work…
