Hi all. I have a question about the proper technique for dense-packing cellulose into existing wall cavities…
Short version: When dense-packing a wall cavity with cellulose, how important is it for the installer to push a semi-rigid hose deep inside a wall and into the tops/bottoms of the wall cavities as opposed to just barely sticking the end of a flexible hose into a hole in the middle of the cavity and holding it there until the cavity fills up?
Long version: I have a 1920’s house in the Chicago suburbs with uninsulated 2×4 exterior walls, brick veneer exterior on the 1st floor, and siding on the 2nd floor. Earlier this year I was getting the siding replaced on the 2nd story of my house and I hired an insulation contractor to dense pack cellulose into the 2nd-floor walls from the exterior while the siding was off. To my surprise, they just stuck a flexible 2.5-inch (or so) diameter hose into similarly-sized drilled holes in the middle of each cavity and held it there until each cavity filled up instead of maneuvering a smaller, semi-rigid hose into the tops/bottoms of each cavity. I’ve seen plenty of videos of cellulose installers doing it the latter way, so I specifically asked the foreman about this but he insisted that their method would work just fine for density and uniformity.
I was originally intending to use the same company to insulate the 1st floor walls as well, which will have to be filled from the interior due to the brick exterior on the 1st floor, but I have doubts that their method is the proper way of doing things and might not achieve proper density or uniformity and could result in low density, settling, voids, etc.
Am I right to be concerned, and therefore should I find another insulation contractor to work with? Or is their method acceptable?
