I am building a single-story 1600 sq ft passive home on a frost-protected shallow foundation in northern Ontario, Canada, in Climate Zone 4 and Growing Zone 4b. My HVAC design will include a Kerr Cold Climate Centrally Ducted Heat Pump with a Brink Flair HRV or ERV. Only two people will be living in the house full-time, and they plan to purchase a heat pump dryer and a hot water tank, and install a high-quality recirculating range fan with grease and carbon filters. I have two design questions: (1) Is HRV or ERV better for this context? And (2) Should the HRV/ERV be a separate balanced system or partially integrated with the central air handler and duct system for the heat pump?
