Hot-dip galvanized vs stainless fasteners for coastal exterior timber connections – GreenBuildingAdvisor

I’m trying to figure out what fasteners to use for an outdoor timber structure near the coast. It’ll get rained on, the air is pretty salty, and some of the timber is treated.

Would you go with hot-dip galvanized or stainless? And do you normally match the fastener coating to the connectors, or just use whatever the connector manufacturer lists?

I work in the fastener business, so I’m not looking for a sales pitch. I’m just curious how builders actually make this call on real jobs.
