A former mining and quarry property in Newport Township, Pennsylvania, is slated for redevelopment as a data center with an on-site fuel cell power plant, according to plans announced by Fit Energy.
The project received township zoning approval for both uses in August. Engineering is underway, with additional permits needed before construction can begin.
The proposed power system would use natural gas fuel cells supplied by Connecticut-based FuelCell Energy under an agreement with Fit Energy. The cells generate electricity through an electrochemical reaction rather than by burning fuel.
Fit Energy said generating electricity at the site would reduce the development’s dependence on the regional grid. The plans would reuse previously developed industrial land in Luzerne County.
Setbacks, vegetation and visual barriers are included in the site design to screen the development from neighboring residences and roads. The project also calls for improvements to electricity, gas, water and sewer infrastructure.
Fit Energy plans to hold a public meeting where residents can examine the proposal and ask the project team questions. Meeting details have not been announced.
