I’m currently designing a proposal for a home in Portland, Maine (Climate Zone 6). The window detail uses Corten steel as the exterior material, which provides an overhang for summer shading while also functioning as flashing. It’s attached directly to the sheathing so that it aligns with the wooden sill. My design intent is to emphasize the window openings as extrusions, which is why the Corten steel extends outward from the façade. I’m hoping to hear from someone with more experience building in this type of climate who could share their expertise on this design decision. Although this is a school project, I’d really appreciate genuine feedback on whether this detail could work from a performance standpoint—budget and cost considerations aside. Thank you.
