I’m currently in the design phase of building my home in Maine, with the goal of creating a place where I can comfortably live for the next 30+ years.
I’m collaborating with an architect on the project, but as we move forward, I’m open to hearing any feedback or suggestions from others.
Sustainability and green building practices are very important to me. In hindsight, I’m feeling a bit uncertain about committing to a single-story, large-footprint design. However, I’m hoping the expansive lot and long-term vision will ultimately justify this choice.
The exterior design is still very conceptual. The site itself spans 20 acres and is heavily sloped, with a significant amount of ledge. Once the final location for the house is selected, we’ll adjust the exterior accordingly.
The general plan is to position the garage on a lower daylight level, with a portion of the driveway extending up to the main living level to accommodate guests and everyday use.
At this stage, I’m considering a full basement under the garage for mechanical systems and storage, while the rest of the home would be built over a crawl space.
