I am re-siding a house built in 1986 in the Cleveland, OH area. As part of the project, we are doing an energy retrofit. I am familiar with current building science and have reference Joe Lstiburek’s perfect wall literature. Even so, I am stumped.
Current walls have aging craft-faced fiberglass in 2×4 walls 16″ OC. Exterior “sheathing” is 1″ foil-faced foam with the foil facing in. Options I am considering:
1. leave everything alone and add Vycor SA to WRB, then 1x rainscreen and new siding.
2. Add Zip R-3 then rainscreen and siding
3. Remove foam. Replace fiberglass with Rockwool. Zip R-9. Rainscreen. Siding.
I do not want to cause an issue where I am negatively impacting the performance of the walls.
Does anyone have experience with a solving a similar situation, or can shed some light on the negative impacts of any of the above options?
