How should I repair dry rot near the bottom of exterior wood siding? – GreenBuildingAdvisor

I’ve noticed some soft and damaged wood near the bottom of my exterior siding and want to fix it before it gets worse… How can I tell whether the damage is limited to the siding or has spread to the be sheathing or framing? 

Would be appreciate advice on identifying the moisture source and choosing a durable repair.
