A nuclear waste disposal demonstration near Cameron, Texas, can now advance from engineering and design toward site preparation, construction and field activities under a Texas Railroad Commission permit.
Deep Isolation Nuclear said its Commercialization Pilot will test the components and operations of its deep borehole disposal system at full scale and depth using non-radioactive materials, and that the project is intended to produce field data and operational experience that could support future commercial projects.
The project team plans to prepare the site for drilling and subsurface testing. Participants include the Deep Borehole Demonstration Center, Halliburton, Amentum, NAC International and Occlusion Nuclear Solutions.
Deep Isolation is developing the technology as a potential method for placing spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in deep underground boreholes. The company said the pilot will examine how established drilling and well-construction practices could be adapted for that purpose.
