Sump pit and rising water levels – GreenBuildingAdvisor

Hello,
I have an old cellar converted to a basement. I’m sure there is nothing modern about its assembly – merely concrete poured over the dirt. It has a sump pit and pump. The pump was tied to the waste water sewer line at some point. The pit is 2 ft deep, looks to be made of clay, but I can’t find any weeping holes in it.
If my primary water intrusion concern is rising water table under the basement, would a sump pit be adequate to catch this and pump it out?
My thinking is that water tables rise evenly. Having this pit two feet deep is deeper than any interior French drain would be. The water would flow better if it had weeping holes in it, but I’m not sure if that’s advisable.
