Passive House projects demand a different workflow—one where architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors collaborate early to reduce risk, improve performance, and create repeatable success.

The most successful projects are those in which the entire team was brought on early enough that each member could inform the final design. From early on, the team should include envelope consultants (unless the design team will handle that in-house) and the mechanical and structural engineers. Bringing the contractor and their team on during or after schematic design also improves outcomes. Some of the best meetings are “super meetings” where the entire team meets to discuss goals and kick off the project. These are held once schematic design is complete and give every member of the team a good idea of what is to come and a strong sense of ownership over their role.

A traditional project’s sequence from design through construction is staged out as follows: architects design through schematic design, consultants “validate” the design, then contractors price drawings they didn’t influence, and tradespeople often improvise in the field. As this process moves along, coordination errors become increasingly difficult and costly to fix. The standard procedure often leads to issues with enclosure continuity and airtightness, incorrectly sized mechanical systems, and illogical sequencing that negatively impact building performance. For Passive House projects, this can’t work.
Why Passive House Requires a Different Process
Regardless of the designer’s experience and comfort level with Passive House design, early collaboration ensures that projects are successful. For experienced teams, building the team early reduces risk by establishing who the team members will be, workflows, and decision authority before design development.
Often, designers ask how to find contractors who already do high performance buildings and Passive House construction. If they do not already know one, the best construction partner for…
