I stumbled across the OX-IS structural insulated sheathing recently and am struggling to understand why there isn’t more buzz about this product (maybe limited availability?)
It seems superior to ZIP R-Sheathing in just about all respects based on the spec sheets (and cost), and it looks perfect for my project. What am I missing??
For context: We are building an addition over the garage along with a new roof and siding over the whole house. I would like to add continuous exterior insulation to improve overall insulation and protect against wind whipping, which is a major issue for us. Our architect recommended the ZIP R-sheathing, and specced out 1.5″ (R-6) for the addition and 1″ (R-3.3) for the existing portion of the house. The offset is to needed because we plan to leave the original sheathing on the house, unless we find out it has issues when the siding comes off… He said he preferred the ZIP R-sheathing over exterior ISO board or Rockwool because it he felt it was easier to ensure a proper install (which makes sense).
The OX-IS appears to be the same idea from an installation perspective, and comes in 1.7″ (R-9), 1″ (R-6), and 0.5″ (R-3) thicknesses. It claims to be at least as strong/rigid as 7/16″ OSB and the product appears lighter than the ZIP R, so would add less weight to the existing portion of the exterior walls.
Appreciate any thoughts about this relatively new product, especially if anyone has had experience with installing it or how it has performed over time!? The installation guide seems to suggest the product would be at least as easy to install as ZIP-R… if not easier.
