Looking for advice on heating upgrades. I’m in west central Wisconsin (climate zone 6). Currently have a Bryant 60K BTU output propane furnace that I found out yesterday needs to be replaced soon. I live in an old farmhouse that I’ve been air sealing quite extensively. Still have to add more insulation to attic, but will get it up to r50 or r60 very soon (the packs of cellulose are sitting in my garage. Just have to blow it in.
Current cost of propane is $1.89/gallon for me. Electricity cost is currently $.111 kWh. No A/C currently.
First question is, would you install a central ducted heat pump or go with minisplits? I have ducts currently.
What would you recommend for a backup? I’ve assumed propane backup is my most cost effective option, but would love advice.
Is it possible to purchase a propane/electric furnace first, then add a heat pump onto the system in a year or so? I wasn’t expecting my current furnace to go out so soon, so looking for ways to spread out the cost if possible.
If it is possible to install propane/electric first, then add a heat pump, any recommendations on brands, models, features that I should consider or avoid?
Also would love any brand/model/feature recommendations for heat pumps given my situation.
Thanks!
