Does a range hood need a motorized damper? – GreenBuildingAdvisor

We are building a pretty-good-house with a 300 CFM range hood, which does not have a damper built in. The manufacturer suggests a passive in-line damper, but I am wondering if such dampers provide a good enough air-seal, or if installing a motorized damper would be a better option. With all the effort and expense going into getting a good air-seal on the house, it seems odd to rely on a simple metal flap. (Note, I’m not talking about make-up air, which is what most discussion of dampers is focused on.)
