Help me decide if closed cell in my attic is really worth it over open cell – GreenBuildingAdvisor

– Where are your goals? Comfort? Reducing energy bills? Code compliance?

– Where are you located?

– What is the house like? (age, overall construction quality)

– What is the roof like? (simple gable, chopped up lots of hips, etc.)

> And the fact that I have never smelled closed cell while every home I have ever been in at least had a “sweet cookie smell” of open cell. Thoughts?

You should never smell any insulation after it’s been installed and aired out. If you do, don’t exclude that type of insulation, but apply extreme supervision to any crew whose work has resulted in that.
